What is organic cotton?

Updated: Jan 18, 2021

Would you like to know the differences of using organic cotton instead of conventional one? You came to the right place! Organic cotton means that it is produced and certified to organic agricultural standards. Its production sustains the health of soils, ecosystems, wildlife and people by using natural processes rather than artificial inputs.

ORGANIC COTTON

. Its farming does not allow the use of toxic chemicals or GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Instead, it combines traditional, natural innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote a good quality of life for all involved. . It uses far less water than conventional one. It is 80% rain-fed (when weather conditions allow), which reduces pressure on local water sources. . The absence of noxious chemicals also means that water is cleaner and safer. . No toxic chemicals are used in the growing of it, meaning no damage of the soil, less impact on the air, use of 71% less water and 62% less energy than conventional one. . Last but not least: the main benefit of organic cotton is that the organic cotton is not treated with pesticides, insecticides, herbicides or GMOs. These toxins are harmful for farmers and workers, consumers, and entire wildlife eco-systems.

CONVENTIONAL COTTON

. It uses about 16% of the world’s insecticides and 7% of pesticides. . It is often grown in water-scarce areas, commonly using irrigation. . It takes 2,700 liters of water to make a conventional cotton t-shirt. . The toxic chemicals used in making conventional cotton garments remain in the fabric and can cause or aggravate health problems in users: rashes, itching, dermatitis, eczema and other skin disorders. . Its growing and processing methods account for 10% of all the pollution on our planet.

An effort in the organic cotton movement is to use growing systems that replenish and maintain soil fertility and build biologically diverse agriculture.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KNOW?

NOW THAT YOU KNOW, YOU CAN BE CONSCIOUS AND TAKE GOOD DECISIONS BASED ON YOUR PRINCIPLES

Near the 2,5 % of the arable surface of the world allocates to the plantations of cotton, and to his turn, these represent 25% of the worldwide pesticides used. Although some measures of regularization the quantity of chemicals allowed in the preparation of fabrics and cloths, still does not exist a strict global rule upon the allowed exposure to some chemists considered highly toxic and the disarray is present widely on the textile industry. Then, as a consumers what can we do?

WE CAN DECIDE

More than half of all textiles made in our planet are made of cotton and the other half has it in its composition. The 5% of the pesticides in the world are used for the cultivation or conventional cotton, a business that in 2001 represented the 2.5% of the total world commerce. It is easy to understand the importance and impact of this material in our life and in our planet.
